HVAC experts recommend getting your furnace serviced and inspected annually to maintain its efficiency and increase its lifespan–but did you know there are tangible clues that show your furnace needs maintenance?

If you notice these warning signs, it’s time to schedule an appointment for your heating system.

1. Your furnace is making strange noises.
Your furnace’s usual operating sounds tend to be like white noise in the background. Once your furnace starts to make some unusual noises, it’s time to call a technician. Keep an ear out for rattling or squealing sounds, as they could mean that there are loose, worn, or faulty parts inside your furnace.

The most concerning sound is a boom, which could be caused by the gas building up during a delayed ignition. If your furnace booms, contact a technician ASAP.

2. The furnace flame burns yellow or orange.
Your furnace flame should burn blue. If the flame is yellow or orange, that usually means that there’s dirt build-up in the burner. It could also mean that the furnace is not making the correct amount of oxygen and gas. If you spot a yellow or orange flame, turn your furnace off and contact a technician.

3. Your furnace produces weak airflow.
In some cases, changing your system’s air filter will fix airflow issues. However, the problem can persist if your furnace’s blower is dirty or if there’s an issue with the fan motor, belt, or bearings.

4. Your home’s indoor air quality is declining.
Many people are surprised by the effects their furnace can have on their indoor air quality. A furnace that’s clogged with dust can circulate that dust throughout your home and give you allergy symptoms when you normally wouldn’t experience them. If the system’s humidifier malfunctions, you can experience dry skin as well as discomfort in your throat and sinuses. If these problems are worse for you than they usually are this time of year, you may want to consult an HVAC and indoor air quality, expert.

5. Your energy bill is higher than in previous years.
The older your furnace gets, the less efficient it becomes. Your furnace will also work less efficiently if it’s dirty and poorly maintained. If you see that your energy bills have increased year over year during cold weather, there’s a good chance that your furnace would benefit from maintenance.

Once its components are cleaned, aligned, and tightened up, your furnace won’t have to work as hard to make your home comfortable. Not only will it heat your home faster, but it will perform that task while spending less energy.
